Google has begun a gradual rollout of a feature that allows you to change your primary @gmail.com address without creating a new account. This update preserves all existing data, including your inbox, Drive files, and photos.

Key Limits and Rules

Frequency
: You can only change your Gmail address once every 12 months.

Lifetime Cap: Each account has a lifetime limit of three changes, allowing for a total of four unique Gmail addresses over time.

Old Address Functionality: Your original address is not deleted; it becomes an alias. You can still use it to sign in, and any mail sent to it will continue to arrive in your same inbox.

Account Type: This feature is currently limited to personal @gmail.com accounts and is not available for managed Google Workspace accounts (work or school).

How to Check Eligibility

As of late 2025, this feature is being released in stages. To see if it is available for your account:

1. Visit your Google Account Personal Info page.

2. Scroll to the Contact info section and select Email.

3. Tap Google Account email. If eligible, you will see an option to "Change email address for your Google Account".

Important Considerations

ChromeOS: Some reports suggest potential issues with settings and files syncing on ChromeOS after a change; it is recommended to back up your device before proceeding.

Third-Party Apps: Changing your primary address may cause friction with non-Google sites that use "Sign in with Google".
