The world's first text message was sent in the UK on December 3, 1992. Software engineer Neil Papworth sent the message "Merry Christmas" from his computer to Vodafone executive Richard Jarvis's mobile phone during a company Christmas event.

At the time, phones couldn't even type or send replies, they could only receive messages, which were limited to 160 characters and originally meant for service notifications.
