Back in my day, when you said you were a programmer, people assumed you were some kind of wizard. And honestly? It kind of felt that way. We didn’t have autocomplete, AI code generators, or fancy IDEs that practically hold your hand through the process. Debugging meant staring at a wall of cryptic assembly errors for hours and maybe, just maybe, walking away with a shred of dignity intact. Writing code wasn’t just about making it work—it was about understanding why it worked.
Fast forward to today, and artificial intelligence has completely changed the game. On one hand, tools like Copilot and ChatGPT are miraculous. They speed up mundane tasks, generate boilerplate code, and even help debug that one bug that’s driving you nuts. I’ll admit, even I’ve leaned on AI to whip up quick scripts or refactor messy codebases. But here’s the rub: while AI is making experienced developers like me more productive, it’s also turning a lot of junior and upcoming programmers into, well… button pushers.
The younger crowd today relies on AI for everything—basic algorithms, loops, even debugging. I’ve seen people who can’t write a simple sorting function without copying it from an AI tool. And debugging? Forget it. AI might flag the issue, but understanding why the issue exists? That’s a skill you only build by struggling through the process yourself. The other problem is the job market itself. Companies don’t need as many juniors anymore because AI can handle a lot of the grunt work. Back then, junior devs were like apprentices, learning by doing and slowly climbing the ladder. Today, businesses want mid-level or senior devs who can design systems, write scalable code, and manage AI tools. The entry-level learning curve? It’s disappearing.
Don’t get me wrong—AI is a gift. It’s saved me countless hours, and it’s an amazing resource. But here’s the harsh truth: in this new AI-driven landscape, companies aren’t hiring developers who just “know how to code.” They’re hiring problem-solvers who can think critically, design systems, and make decisions AI can’t. If you’re relying too much on AI to write your code, you’re not just stalling your own growth—you’re making yourself replaceable in a market that’s already moving faster than ever. Because at the end of the day, it’s not the devs who can use AI who will thrive—it’s the ones who don’t need it.
